Perplexity is the AI assistant that shows its work. Every answer comes with numbered citations, so you can see exactly which websites it leaned on. That makes it the most "winnable" AI engine for a small business: you're not guessing what it read, you can look. If you're working out how to rank in Perplexity, that visibility is your biggest advantage.
It's also a more open door than ChatGPT. In SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, Perplexity recommended 7.4% of the roughly 350,000 business locations studied, compared with 1.2% for ChatGPT (Search Engine Land). Still selective, but meaningfully less so.
This guide explains how Perplexity picks its sources, then gives you a seven-step plan to earn citations.
How Perplexity Picks Its Sources and Citations
Perplexity's own Help Center describes it as an answer engine that searches the web in real time as you ask, and backs each answer with citations linking to the original sources.
Three things follow from that.
1. It reads the live web, every time. Unlike a model answering from memory, Perplexity searches as the question is asked. So a page you publish or fix today can be cited this week, as long as Perplexity can reach it.
2. Its crawlers decide whether you're in the pool. Perplexity's crawler documentation names two agents:
- PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results. Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for training AI foundation models, and recommends allowing it so your site appears in results.
- Perplexity-User fetches a page when a person's question needs it. Because a user triggers it, it generally ignores robots.txt.
3. It leans hard on community and video sources. Ahrefs tracked citations across more than 3.1 million US queries. In its September 2026 update, Reddit took 21.6% and YouTube 20.8% of the citations among Perplexity's 50 most-cited sites, with Wikipedia a distant third at 6.3% (Ahrefs). Review sites appear too: Tripadvisor at 1.5%, Yelp at 0.9% and Trustpilot at 0.8%.
One caution on that data: it covers queries on every topic, not just local services. It tells you Perplexity trusts discussion and video heavily. It doesn't tell you a plumber's search will always cite Reddit.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT: What's Different for a Small Business
| Perplexity | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Shows sources? | Always, as numbered citations | Sometimes, depending on mode |
| Answers from | Live web search on every question | Training data plus live search for many questions |
| Crawler to allow | PerplexityBot | OAI-SearchBot |
| Share of locations recommended (SOCi 2026) | 7.4% | 1.2% |

Because Perplexity shows its citations, you can measure Perplexity AI SEO more directly than any other assistant. That's the backbone of Step 1 below. The foundations are the same as for ChatGPT, which we cover in how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.
How to Rank in Perplexity: 7 Steps for Small Businesses
Step 1: See who Perplexity cites today

Before changing anything, look. Open Perplexity and ask the questions your customers ask:
- "Best [your service] in [your city]"
- "How much does [a common job] cost in [your city]?"
- "[Your business name] reviews"
For each answer, click the numbered citations and write down every source. After ten or so questions, you'll have a map: which directories, which Reddit threads, which competitor pages and which local sites Perplexity trusts for your category.
That list is your plan. Every source on it is either a page you can appear on or a format you can match. Repeat the exercise monthly, because answers vary between runs and change over time.
Step 2: Let PerplexityBot in
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and make sure nothing blocks PerplexityBot, either by name or through a blanket "Disallow: /" rule. Then check your hosting, CDN or firewall settings for an "AI bots" toggle.
If you use a web application firewall, Perplexity recommends allowing requests that match both its user-agent and its published IP ranges, and refreshing those ranges from its JSON files regularly. Changes to robots.txt can take up to 24 hours to take effect.
If your site can't be crawled, nothing else in this guide matters. It's the same failure we cover as reason #1 in Why Doesn't ChatGPT Recommend My Business?
Step 3: Write pages Perplexity can quote
Perplexity builds answers out of short, self-contained passages. The easier a passage is to lift, the better its chances of being cited. For each core service page:
- Answer first. Put a two- or three-sentence direct answer at the top: what the service is, who it's for, where you offer it.
- Use question headings. "How long does a water heater replacement take?" is a heading Perplexity can match to a question.
- Be specific. Price ranges you're comfortable publishing, typical timelines, service areas by town name, licenses held.
- Add a short FAQ with FAQ schema, answering the questions you get on every call.
Generic copy like "We provide quality service at competitive prices" gives Perplexity nothing to cite. A sentence like "Most tankless water heater installs in our service area take four to six hours" does.
Step 4: Show up where Perplexity already looks
Go back to your Step 1 map. For each third-party source Perplexity cited:
- Directories and review sites: Claim or complete your profile, with the same name, address and phone number you use everywhere else.
- Local news and community sites: These are earned, not bought. Offer a useful local angle, such as seasonal advice or a community project.
- Industry associations and supplier "find an installer" pages: If you qualify, get listed.
The aim is simple: when Perplexity checks the sources it already trusts, your business should be there, described accurately.
Step 5: Take part in Reddit honestly
Reddit is the single most-cited source in Ahrefs' Perplexity data, so ignoring it leaves a gap. But Reddit communities are quick to spot and punish self-promotion, and getting banned helps no one.
What works:
- Find the subreddits for your city and your trade.
- Answer questions you're genuinely qualified to answer, in plain language, without a sales pitch.
- Say who you are when it's relevant ("I'm a plumber in Austin, and here's what I'd check first"), and follow each subreddit's rules on self-promotion.
What doesn't: fake accounts, paid upvotes, or posting your own business as if you were a happy customer. That breaks Reddit's rules and erodes the trust that makes the citation worth anything.
Step 6: Get reviews that say something
Review sites show up in Perplexity's citations, and the content of a review matters as much as the star rating. "Great service!" tells an AI nothing. A review that mentions the job and the town ("fixed our AC the same day in Mesa") matches how people phrase questions.
When you ask for a review, ask customers to mention what you did and where. Never buy, fake or incentivize reviews. If you do get YouTube video content made, such as a short "what to expect" explainer for your most common job, the same principle applies: specific beats generic.
Step 7: Measure citations monthly
Keep a simple spreadsheet with ten customer questions. Once a month, run each one in Perplexity and record:
- Mentioned? Is your business named?
- Cited? Does one of your pages, or a page about you, appear in the citations?
- Accurate? Are your details correct?
SOCi found that business information on Perplexity and ChatGPT was only about 68% accurate (Search Engine Land), so the accuracy column matters. If Perplexity gets your hours or service area wrong, trace the citation to the page it came from and fix that page.
Look for trends across months, not single answers. One run is an anecdote.
A Worked Example: Turning a Citation Map Into a To-Do List
Here's how Step 1 turns into action. This is an illustrative example, not real data: imagine a roofing company in a mid-sized city running five Perplexity questions and recording the citations.
| Question asked | Sources Perplexity cited (illustrative) | What the roofer does next |
|---|---|---|
| "Best roofers in [city]" | A local Reddit thread, Yelp, a competitor's homepage | Complete Yelp profile; answer helpfully in the local subreddit |
| "How much does a roof replacement cost in [city]?" | A national cost-guide site, a competitor's pricing page | Publish a plain-English cost-factors page with real price ranges |
| "How long does a roof replacement take?" | A YouTube video, a manufacturer's FAQ | Ask the shingle manufacturer about its contractor locator page |
| "Signs I need a new roof" | A home-improvement magazine, Reddit | Write a "signs you need a new roof" page with real photos |
| "[Business name] reviews" | Google reviews, BBB | Fix an outdated phone number on the BBB listing |
Five questions, five specific jobs. None of them is a trick; each one either puts the business on a source Perplexity already trusts, or creates a page that answers the question better than what's cited now.
Two things to notice. First, competitors' pages show up, and that's useful: they show the level of detail Perplexity rewards for your trade. Second, a wrong detail on a third-party listing (the old BBB phone number) is something you'd likely never have spotted without checking the citations.
Common Mistakes When Trying to Get Cited by Perplexity
- Hiding answers behind "contact us for a quote." If every price question on your site ends in a form, Perplexity will cite someone who answered.
- One giant "Services" page. A single page listing twelve services gives Perplexity nothing focused to quote. One clear page per core service works better.
- Inconsistent details across sources. If Yelp, your website and a directory disagree on your phone number or service area, Perplexity can repeat the wrong one.
- Checking once and stopping. Answers shift over time. A monthly check catches new sources, new competitors and new errors.
What This Means for Your Business
- Home services (plumbers, HVAC, roofers, electricians): Steps 2 and 3 first. Perplexity gets lots of "how much does X cost" and "how long does X take" questions, and clear, specific service pages win those.
- Dentists and med spas: Treatment pages that answer real patient questions plainly, plus reviews that name treatments. Keep health claims factual and within your professional rules.
- Law firms: Practice-area pages that explain the process in plain English, and complete legal directory profiles.
- Agencies: Step 1's citation map is an ideal client deliverable. It shows clients where they stand, using sources they can click and check.
What Won't Help
- Paying for "Perplexity placement." Organic citations can't be bought.
- Anyone guaranteeing you'll be cited. Perplexity's answers vary from run to run, and nobody controls them.
- Reddit spam. It breaks Reddit's rules and tends to backfire.
- An llms.txt file on its own. It can be a tidy summary of your site, but it doesn't control which sources Perplexity cites.
FAQ
How long does it take to appear in Perplexity answers?
Perplexity searches the web live, so a crawlable, clearly written page can be cited soon after it's indexed. Perplexity says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours. Earning mentions on third-party sources takes longer: think weeks to months.
Do I need to block or allow Perplexity-User?
Perplexity-User fetches pages when a person's question needs them, and because a user triggers it, it generally ignores robots.txt. PerplexityBot is the crawler that decides whether you appear in search results, so make sure that one is allowed.
Is Perplexity AI optimization different from Google SEO?
They overlap a lot: crawlable pages, clear answers and trusted mentions help both. The difference is emphasis. Perplexity cites community and review sources heavily, and it shows its citations, so you can see exactly what it trusts. For the bigger picture, read our guide to generative engine optimization.
Does Perplexity use my site to train AI models?
According to Perplexity, PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. It's used to surface and link websites in Perplexity's search results.
