Shopify SEO

Your Shopify store is fighting itself

Shopify creates duplicate URLs by default. It ships thin product pages. It hides your collections behind parameters Google won't crawl properly. Most stores have all three and no idea any of it is happening — because none of it is visible when you look at your own site. It only shows up in what you don't earn: the rankings you never got, the traffic that went somewhere else, the products nobody found.

Scan your store first

We'll show you exactly what's holding it back — and whether Shopify SEO is what you actually need.

Free · About a minute · No account needed

Why scan before buying? Because we don't know what your store needs until we look — and neither do you. The scan tells both of us, and you keep the report either way.
What we find

What usually goes wrong with Shopify stores

Every item below is something our scanner genuinely checks. Run it and you'll see which of these are on your store — in your own report, in these exact words. Most stores have three or four. Almost none have zero.

Duplicate collection URLs

Shopify serves the same collection at /collections/shoes, again at /collections/all/shoes, and again with every filter and sort parameter appended. Google sees several near-identical pages competing for one keyword and can't confidently pick one. The ranking signals that should concentrate on a single page get split across four or five, and none of them ranks as well as one of them would have.

This is not a misconfiguration. It's how Shopify works out of the box, which is exactly why so many stores have it and so few know.

What this looks like

A store selling running shoes had its main collection reachable at four distinct URLs, plus another eleven with sort parameters attached. Google had indexed six of them. The one linked from the main navigation — the one that should have ranked — wasn't the one Google was showing.

Manufacturer product descriptions

The same paragraph appears on your store and forty others selling the same product. Google has no reason to prefer yours, and a buyer reading it learns nothing that helps them decide between you and a competitor with a lower price.

Product pages are where the money is made, and most Shopify stores leave them exactly as the supplier wrote them. It's understandable — writing two hundred product descriptions is genuinely tedious work. But it's also the difference between a catalogue that ranks and one that sits there.

What this looks like

A fragrance retailer had 140 products, every description copied from the distributor's sheet. Search Console showed the product pages getting impressions for brand-name searches and almost nothing else — no ingredient searches, no occasion searches, none of the long-tail queries that actually convert.

Checked by: Content Depth / Word Count · Duplicate Content Risk

No Product schema

Without structured data, your price, availability and reviews never appear in search results. No star ratings, no price, nothing that makes your listing worth clicking over the five around it.

And it matters more now than it did two years ago. When someone asks an AI assistant where to buy something, it needs structured data to read. A store without it isn't in that answer — a competitor with it is.

What this looks like

Two stores selling the same product, similar prices, similar authority. One had Product and AggregateRating schema; the other didn't. The one with schema showed a price and a star rating in the search result. Same position, roughly double the clicks.

Checked by: Structured Data (Schema) · Entity Clarity

Apps quietly slowing everything down

Every app injects its own scripts. Five apps later your product pages take six seconds on mobile, and nobody noticed because it happened one app at a time over eighteen months.

Speed is a ranking factor and a conversion factor simultaneously, which means you lose twice — worse positions, and fewer of the people who do arrive stay long enough to buy.

What this looks like

A store had eleven apps installed, four of which were no longer used but still loading on every page. Removing those four and deferring two others took mobile load from 6.2 seconds to 2.8. Nothing about the store's design changed.

Checked by: Page Load Time · Image Optimization

Collections and products barely linked

Products sit in isolation with no path between related items. Crawlers can't reach parts of your catalogue efficiently, and buyers never discover the thing they would have bought if they'd seen it.

Internal linking is the cheapest work in SEO — no outreach, no new content, just connecting what you already have. Almost no Shopify store does it deliberately, because the default theme doesn't and nobody thinks to add it.

What this looks like

A store with 200 products had no related-product links anywhere. Products were reachable only through their collection page, and several sat three clicks from the homepage. After adding related-product and cross-collection linking, crawl coverage in Search Console improved without a single new page being published.

Checked by: Internal Linking Density

No reviews, no trust signals

No review markup, no visible testimonials, no clear returns policy. Buyers check these before they check your prices, especially on a store they've never heard of.

And without review markup, even the reviews you do have stay invisible in search results — you're getting the trust benefit on-site and none of the visibility benefit in the listing.

What this looks like

A store had 300+ genuine reviews from a review app, all displaying correctly on product pages, none of them marked up. Adding rating schema put star ratings in the search results for products that already had reviews. No new reviews collected, no new content written — purely making existing proof visible.

How we fix it

Found is only half the job

Other tools stop at the list. Here's exactly what we do about each one — including the steps, so you can judge whether we know what we're doing.

What we foundHow we fix it

Duplicate collection URLs

Several URLs serving the same collection, all competing for the same keyword.

Canonicals set, parameters handled

One canonical URL per collection, filter parameters correctly excluded from indexing, sitemap rebuilt so Google indexes one version rather than five.

2-3 daysEvery package
See exactly how
  1. Crawl every collection URL variant Shopify is generating, including parameter combinations
  2. Identify which version should be canonical — usually the one linked from navigation, but not always
  3. Set self-referencing canonicals on the chosen version, pointing variants at it
  4. Configure parameter handling so filter and sort URLs aren't indexed at all
  5. Rebuild and resubmit the sitemap with only the canonical set

This is usually the highest-impact fix on a Shopify store, and one of the fastest.

Manufacturer descriptions

Copy duplicated across dozens of competing stores.

Rewritten around real buying intent

Descriptions written for what people actually search and ask — long enough to rank, specific enough to convert.

OngoingGrowth & above
See exactly how
  1. Pull the queries your product pages already get impressions for in Search Console
  2. Identify the gap — what people search that your descriptions don't mention at all
  3. Rewrite around real intent: what it's for, who it suits, what makes it different from the near-identical product next to it
  4. Prioritise by traffic potential — your top 20 products first, not alphabetically
  5. Send you the first batch to approve before we continue

We don't generate these with AI and publish them. Product descriptions written by a machine read like product descriptions written by a machine, and buyers can tell.

No Product schema

Price, stock and reviews invisible to search and AI.

Full Product markup, validated

Product, Offer and AggregateRating schema across every product, validated so it actually renders rather than just being present in the source.

3-4 daysEvery package
See exactly how
  1. Audit what your theme already outputs — many themes have partial schema that's incomplete or invalid
  2. Add Product schema with real price, availability, SKU and brand
  3. Add AggregateRating only where genuine reviews exist
  4. Validate every template through Google's testing tools, per template type not just once
  5. Re-check after a week — schema that validates on day one can break when a theme updates

We only mark up reviews that genuinely exist. Fake review markup is a manual-action risk, and we won't do it regardless of who asks.

Slow, app-heavy pages

Pages loading slowly on mobile.

Scripts audited, images optimised

We identify which apps cost the most, defer what can wait, and fix the image sizing that's usually the single biggest problem.

1 weekGrowth & above
See exactly how
  1. Measure each app's real cost with a script-level performance trace, not guesswork
  2. Identify apps that are installed but no longer used — there are almost always some
  3. Defer non-critical scripts so they load after content rather than before it
  4. Fix image delivery: correct formats, correct sizes, lazy loading below the fold
  5. Re-measure and show you the before and after on the same pages

We don't remove apps. We tell you what each one costs and you decide — some are worth their weight.

Weak internal linking

Products isolated, collections unlinked.

A real internal linking structure

Related products, collection cross-links and category paths, so crawlers reach everything and buyers see more.

3-5 daysEvery package
See exactly how
  1. Map your current internal link graph and find the orphans — products nothing links to
  2. Add related-product linking based on genuine relationships, not random selection
  3. Cross-link collections that buyers actually move between
  4. Ensure nothing important sits more than three clicks from the homepage
  5. Verify improved crawl coverage in Search Console afterwards

This costs nothing but time and is consistently underrated. It's often the difference between a catalogue that's indexed and one that's half-indexed.

Before you try this yourself

Common mistakes

What we usually find when someone has already tried to fix this on their own.

Installing an SEO app and assuming it's handled

Most Shopify SEO apps do one narrow thing well — usually meta tags — and present it as complete coverage. They don't fix canonicals, they don't write content, and several add their own scripts that make speed worse. An app can be useful; it isn't a strategy.

Rewriting descriptions with AI and publishing them unread

It's fast and it feels productive. But AI-written product copy reads like AI-written product copy, and buyers can tell within a sentence. Worse, it's often generic in exactly the way the manufacturer copy was — you've replaced one non-differentiating description with another.

Blocking crawlers to "save crawl budget"

Occasionally a well-meaning developer adds Disallow rules to robots.txt to stop Google crawling filter URLs. This usually blocks more than intended, and crawl budget is rarely the real constraint on a store with a few hundred products.

Deleting old products instead of redirecting them

Discontinued products get deleted, their URLs 404, and whatever authority those pages had disappears. A 301 to the nearest equivalent product or the parent collection keeps it.
